Perales is a Metallurgist graduated from the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) in Perú. Oscar moved to the Institute for Advanced Materials Processing, Tohoku University in Japan, where he got his Ph.D. in Materials Processing in 1998. Perales was invited to join the Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Tohoku University (CIRTU) in November 1998. At CIRTU he was involved in research related to size-controlled synthesis and characterization of nanostructures and development of size-selective separation methods for nanosize polydisperse crystals. Perales also worked as a member of the research team SONY-Tohoku University, being co-inventor of processes related to the size-controlled synthesis of magnetic nanomaterials. Oscar is with the Department of Engineering Science and Materials of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus (URPM) since 2002 and his research interest involves the size, shape and structure-controlled synthesis of nanostructures for spintronics, high-density storage, heat management, nano-medicine (processing of quantum dots for Photo Dynamic Cancer Therapy) and nanocomposites for water cleaning and disinfection. The competitiveness of Perales work is demonstrated by the support he receives from several agencies, e.g. the National Science Foundation (NSF), the US Department of Defense, the US Department of Education, the US Department of Agriculture, NASA, the US Geological Survey, among others. He is also Co-director of the $10M NSF-CREST Center on Bio-Nanotechnology at UPRM and the $3.6M USDA-Center on Education and Training in Agriculture and Related Sciences. Perales, three times Distinguished Professor, recently appointed Associate Dean of Research of the College of Engineering at UPRM and Corresponding Academic of the Peruvian National Academy of, is author of more than 130 scientific and technological publications in materials processing and nanotechnology. He has participated as invited panelist for the NSF and ONR in the USA.
